Favorite Holiday Traditions

From Christmas to Hanukkah and everything in between, December is a month of celebration and tradition. Families all have their favorite ways of getting into the holiday spirit.

Hanukkah

Festive Food
Many traditional foods are cooked in oil in remembrance of the oil that burned in the temple for eight nights. Latkes--potato pancakes--and Sufganiya--jam-filled donuts--are both Hanukkah favorites.

Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel...
In this traditional game, players start with equal amounts of candies, chocolate coins, which are called gelt, or other tokens. Each player puts one token in the pot and takes turns spinning the dreidel. Depending on which letter lands face up, they either take the whole pot, half of the pot, add to the pot or do nothing. The game is over when one player wins all of the tokens.

Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, come light the Menorah
A candle on the nine-branched menorah is lit each night during the celebration. The eight candles symbolize burning of the oil that should have only lasted one night, but miraculously burned for eight and the ninth candle is used to light the others.

Christmas

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree!
Picking out the perfect tree, tying it to the roof of the car and decorating it with lights and ornaments is a popular Christmas tradition. Wrapped gifts are placed under the tree until they are ready to be opened on Christmas Day.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town
This jolly, red-suited fellow is the epitome of Christmas for children. They get their picture taken with him, write him a wish list, sing songs about him and leave him cookies on Christmas Eve. Even adults enjoy the joy that Santa brings during this time of year.

Fa la la la la...
Whether you go door-to-door singing with your friends and family or listen to continuous Christmas music on the radio in your car, these tunes are guaranteed to get you in the holiday spirit. As Buddy the Elf once said, "The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!"

Deck the Halls
From outdoor lights and reindeer, to snowflakes and Santas, Christmas decorations create a festive feel during the month of December. Nativity scenes are also popular and help us remember what Christmas is all about.

A Christmas Story
From classics like "It's a Wonderful Life" to modern movies, such as "Elf," this seasonal entertainment never gets old from year to year. "A Christmas Story" is also a favorite and plays all day on Christmas Eve. Sitting by a fire with a cup of hot chocolate is a perfect setting to watch your family favorites.

Benefit for Members – Paramount Club Seats Anytime You Need Them!

What is the most frustrating thing about attending the theater? Some might say parking, seat placement or even obtaining the best tickets, but it could be the line for the bathroom during intermission.

The Bellevue Club seeks to do away with all these frustrations through its VIP Paramount Club experience. Bellevue Club members can use this perk at any time by calling the Member Events Director for tickets to any show at The Paramount. Even if the show is sold out, she can often (but not always) still get you tickets. This exceptional theater experience comes with exclusive access to the best seats in the house, located in the loge of the Paramount Theater. Members also have access to a private theater entrance, validated parking and entrance to the exclusive Paramount Club lounge, which offers private restrooms (no waiting in the long line during intermission!), personal bar service and complimentary appetizers provided by Pink Restaurant & Ultra Lounge.

The Paramount Club is a true VIP experience, and we’re proud to be able to offer it to our Bellevue Club members.

And the Paramount Club isn’t just for big Broadway shows! They also have a great lineup of comedy, dance and musical talents. A few shows coming up in the next few months are Sting, Tony Bennett, Woody Allen, West Side Story, Yo Gabba Gabba, Kathy Griffin and Mama Mia. This is an experience you don’t want to miss, even if it’s just for the private bathroom!

Movember: Week 2

According to Movember.com, there are 829,661 registered participants from around the world. As of now, the global total is $59,668,388. Movember

Many people have heard of "No Shave November," but Movember is the season of the mustache! Each year, men in the U.S. and around the world sprout these mo's to raise money and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer. Known as "Mo Bros," these men become walking, talking billboards, bringing attention to these too-often ignored male health concerns by promoting public and private conversation. Money is raised through donations to an individual participant, a team of participants or directly to the Movember cause itself.

Here are the Bellevue Club's very own Mo Bros. A new photo will be posted on the blog each week until the 30 days of Movember come to an end.

I’m hoping to grow the old-timey mustache—the one that curls up on the ends.
—Christopher Mitchell, Luna Express Manager

[The mustache] may start to look creepy.

I heard about Movember on the radio. I didn’t have the guts to do it last year. My wife hates it already.

Must-haves for spin class

Just like yoga, it is important to come prepared to spin classes with a few basic items to make your workout more enjoyable. Get geared up for spinning success with these necessities:
  • Water bottle: it's important to stay hydrated while you work up a sweat. One that is easy to drink without spilling or having to slow down is ideal.
  • Padded classic bike shorts: padded bike shorts can make those 40-60 minutes on the bike seat more comfortable by helping you avoid chafing and pain.
  • Super absorbent towel: don't leave your towel at home because you are guaranteed to be dripping sweat in these intense cardio classes.
  • Seat cover: if you decide to forgo the padded bike shorts, seat covers can also help provide maximum comfort.
  • Heart rate monitor: help assess how well you are doing and see if you are in your target heart rate zone.

Kick up your cardio!

Running can get boring and repetitive for many people. Here are some tips for spicing up your routine so that the dread of boredom doesn't come between you and your workout!

Save your new tunes: New songs or your favorite CD can really get you pumped up, so put them on your workout playlist only. That way you will be excited to run--and keep running!

Run a new route: For outdoorsy runners, mix up your route each time or run your favorite one backwards. This way you can avoid the boredom of looking at the same houses and trees every time.

Download an audiobook: By listening to a novel while you run, you will be so distracted by the captivating plot or entertaining characters, you won't want to stop running.

Mix up your pace: Add bursts of sprinting intervals to mix up your speed and make your run less monotonous.

Watch your favorite shows: Catch up on your favorite TV shows while working out. You could watch them on your iPad, the Club TVs or from your own DVR if you are working out on a home treadmill or elliptical.

Track your progress: There are apps available for smart phones that allow you to see how many miles you've ran and calories you've burned. This will keep you motivated to keep going and to work even harder.

This article also has more tips for beating boredom when running.

Hate the treadmill or just not a fan of running? There are other ways to get some cardio into your workout. Try a dance class, like Zumba. Jumping rope is also a good alternative to running because only 10 minutes at a quick pace burns 132 calories! Click here to get more ideas.

Healthy Habits

Focusing on healthy eating strategies is more important than trends or fads when it comes to losing weight. Developing healthy habits will help your physique.

  • Eat an early dinner: or at least stop eating three hours before you go to bed. Researchers at Northwestern University found that adults who regularly ate after 8 p.m. ingested the most calories and had the most body fat.
  • Reward yourself: establish a reward system once you have a healthy routine. If you reward yourself with a small dessert everyday will prevent you from breaking down and binge-eating. But only reward yourself if you deserve it!
  • Eat breakfast: jumpstart you metabolism and prevent yourself from over indulging throughout the day by eating a nutritious breakfast. Eggs with fruit and whole-wheat toast is a great option because it has a healthy balance of fiber and protein.
  • Drink water: researchers from Virginia Tech found that people who drank 2 glasses of water before each meal lost 30% more body fat over 12 weeks than those who didn't. Also, try replacing those sugar-loaded drinks with water.
  • Sleep 6 to 8 hours each night: lack of sleep has been shown to increase appetite, lower willpower and increase cravings for high-calorie foods.
  • Skip the "value" meals: ordering a combo meal just gives you more food than you want or need. Resist the temptation and go with a modestly sized burger or other menu item to save cash and calories.
  • Laugh: depending on your body size and intensity of your laughter, it's possible to lose 10 to 40 calories just by laughing for 15 minutes each day!
  • Walk after meals: walking after a meal can help you lose calories as well as lower your blood sugar and prevent your body from storing fat.
  • Take the stairs: it's easier to maintain your weight when you move more throughout the day.
  • Avoid dinner distractions: pay attention to the meal you are eating so that your brain can register that you are full and satisfied.

Tips for buying running shoes

With an endless variety of running shoes, finding the perfect pair can be challenging and overwhelming. Your shoes can make or break your workout, so make sure you can find a pair that will comfortably last the many miles you have ahead of you. Here are five things you should ignore when searching for a new pair:

  1. Color: don't just buy a pair of running shoes based on the color. Make sure they have other features that you want in a shoe such as a good fit, comfort and a design that fits your running style.
  2. Price: no need to go overboard, but having a flexible budget when shopping for the perfect shoe will allow you to try on a variety of brands and styles. It is helpful to go to a running specialty store so you can try on tons of pairs.
  3. Brand: focus on the feel, not the brand. It's easy to find a brand you like and stick with it, but if you step out of your shoe brand comfort zone you might find a pair you like even more.
  4. Style: just because they look good doesn't mean they feel good. Make sure you don't buy a pair of running shoes based on the latest fads.
  5. Celebrity Affiliation: if you see your favorite celebrity endorsing a certain shoe, it doesn't mean that it will work for you. Give it a try, but don't let that be the determining factor in purchasing a shoe.

Tips for treating kids' colds

Here are some tips to help your child get through that stuffy-nose misery.
  1. Keep them home if they are contagious or too sick to participate in school activities. This may help your child get better faster and help avoid spreading germs.
  2. Treat a fever and those aches and pains by giving your child acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil). Always use recommended products and dosages.
  3. Prevent dehydration by giving your child water, watered-down juice, Pedialyte, popsicles and chicken soup.
  4. Fight a stuffy nose with saline drops. Research suggests that children ages 6 to 10 who receive a nasal saline rinse recover faster from colds or flu.
  5. Prevent irritated skin by wiping your child' nose with a warm, wet cloth. If irritation does occur, rub petroleum jelly on the area to soothe it.
  6. Keep hands clean by washing hands regularly. This habit will help keep them healthy and germ free. Sing "Happy Birthday" twice to make sure those hands get washed thoroughly!
  7. Honey can be used to soothe a sore throat or cough.
  8. Steam up their lungs by running a steamy shower and then bringing them into the bathroom. The humidity relieves the upper airway swelling that can cause coughs.
  9. Try a cool-mist humidifier to loosen congestion and help them breathe easier.
  10. Rest. Getting an adequate night's sleep will help your child recover as fast as possible.
