Climb4Cancer

Member Joel Blatt is organizing the sixth annual Climb4Cancer to raise money for cancer research. This bike climb will follow the same route as the last five years--up zoo hill.

There are only 200 spots available, so be sure to register sooner rather than later for the July 21 event. Registration is free; however, it is strongly encouraged to make a donation before the event or during check in, with 100 percent of money raised going directly to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research.

  • Start: Pine Ridge neighborhood; up one block from Newport Way/SE 54th
  • Finish: 100 meters before SE 60th/Cougar Mountain Drive
Event is staged in the Pine Ridge neighborhood right off 54th.  It is probably 100 meters up 54th from Newport Way. Go to Google Maps and find Cougar Mountain Zoo in Issaquah, if you don’t know where it is.  Then use your Garmin, do repeats, and try and go sub-something.  Course record is Sub-11 minutes!

Famed Woman Mountaineer and Author to Speak, Sign Books at Bellevue Club

Stacy Allison, the first American woman to summit Mount Everest, will be the keynote speaker at the Breathe Easy Breakfast at the Bellevue Club on May 16.  The event is a benefit for the American Lung Association’s lung health, clean air and tobacco control programs.

At the age of 22, Alison reached the top of Alaska’s Mount McKinley, the highest point in North America, and then climbed the 22,495-foot peak known as Nepal’s Matterhorn. She became the first American woman to summit the 24,600-foot Pik Communism.  And in 1988, after 29 days on the mountain, Alison became the first American woman to summit Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain at 29,028 feet. She went on to become the leader of a successful expedition up K2, considered the most difficult peak on Earth to climb. Alison has written two books about her experiences.

Also at the breakfast, the American Lung Association will be announcing the A. Bruce Montgomery M.D. – American Lung Association Endowed Chari in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at UW Medicine, and the Joanne and Bruce Montgomery in honor of the American Lung Association ARCS Endowed Fellowship at UW.

Individual tickets are $35, a table of 8 is $280, and a VIP table of 8 is $500. For more information visit www.breatheeasybellevue.org or call 206-512-3285.
