Meet Bellevue Club Trainer Nancy Black

Name:  Nancy Black

Hometown: Born in Portland, raised in Seattle

Number of years as a personal trainer: Over 25 years in the business, 12 years teaching Pilates

Number of years at the Bellevue Club:

Certifications/Degrees: Degree in kinesiology, Romana’s Pilates Instructor, Master Pilates Trainer, Pilates Method Alliance, Heart Zones, Booty Barre, TRX, RRCA

Area of Expertise: Pilates training and Pilates teacher training.

What can clients expect out of a training session with you? Clients can expect a workout tailored to meet their goals, a strong foundation of finding and initiating movement from the core, and lifelong fitness and educational benefits. I also suggest other areas they may need to focus on, such as cardio training, to round out their goals.

What is your own greatest physical or fitness-related accomplishment? A physical accomplishment would be going through major foot surgery twice and rehabilitating to where I can be 100 percent active again! Fitness-related would probably be mountain biking to the top of Bald Mountain in Sun Valley (quickly) one summer morning when there were fires just miles away. Not the smartest thing I’ve ever done, but I did it.

What is the most rewarding part about being a personal trainer? Having a connection with clients and helping them set and attain their fitness goals. It is very rewarding to be a part of helping people become stronger, healthier and make longterm changes.

What is your No. 1 piece of advice for people who have a fitness goal, whether it is to lose 10 pounds or complete an Ironman? Stay steady, consistent and focused so you advance without injury or burnout.

What is one fitness-related misconception that drives you crazy? TV infomercials and fitness magazines give the illusion that you can change your body overnight. In reality, it takes dedication, hard work and a well thought-out plan.

What is your favorite song/artist to work out to? I like to listen to Pandora and mix it up.

What is your favorite pre-workout nutritional routine? I’m not big on eating much before a workout, but if I need energy, I’ll eat a cashew Luna bar.

What is your favorite post-workout recovery meal? I love quinoa salad with black beans, avocado, tomatoes and cilantro, with coconut aminos. It’s really good and satisfying.

What is the one thing you find yourself repeating over and over again to clients? Rome wasn’t built in a day! Be patient and consistent.

Is there anything else you think sets you apart as a trainer? I really enjoy working with people and connecting with them. I have exercised my entire life, been through injury and rehabilitation and have a good understanding of the body and how to build the systems of strength, cardio and flexibility to make a well-rounded program. Exercise is fun!

Meet Bellevue Club Trainer Jennifer Saltzman

Name:  Jennifer Saltzman
Hometown: Topanga Canyon, California
Number of years as a personal trainer: 19 years
Number of years at the Bellevue Club: 13 years

Certifications/Degrees:  Bachelor of Arts in modern dance, Pilates Instructor certification, Integrative Medicine certification, Metabolic Typing Advisor certification

Area of Expertise (or special certifications):  Pilates, specifically in the areas of deep and effective full-body integration and connection, chronic neck and shoulder problems, and nutrition and diet.

What can clients expect out of a training session with you?  A great full-body workout, in which they learn to initiate movement from the core, work on flexibility, balance and much improved body awareness. I help clients “find their core,” which includes finding muscles they did not know they had and involves much more than just the abs.

What is your own greatest physical or fitness-related accomplishment?
Overcoming old dance injuries and health challenges through a myriad of healing modalities, therapies and nutritional wisdom; being able to do things now that I could not do for years.

What is the most rewarding part about being a personal trainer?
Helping clients become much more body aware and efficient in their movement, and seeing clearly that what I am teaching them is really making a difference.

What is your No. 1 piece of advice for people who have a fitness goal, whether it is to lose 10 pounds or complete an Ironman?
Commit to your process, do something every day toward your goal, and support yourself with excellent nutrition and physical activities that keep you balanced (i.e. stretching, breathing and meditation). Also, listen to your body: take a day off if you are too tired.

What is one fitness-related misconception that drives you crazy?
That just increasing exercise and cutting calories will necessarily produce weight loss for everybody.

What is your favorite song/artist to workout to? Silence

What is your favorite pre-workout nutritional routine?  Drinking Pollen Burst and a good breakfast with protein.

What is your favorite post-workout recovery meal? Drink Rebound. Eat plenty of protein, veggies and good fats.

What is the one thing you find yourself repeating over and over again to clients?
Shoulders down, stomach in.

Is there anything else you think sets you apart as a trainer?
My teaching is very much informed by the subtleties of body connection, my training as a dancer, and a strong intuitive sense. Through years of observing the power of implementing even a slight shift in intention and position, I am able to assist clients to quickly and increasingly deepen their core connection and awareness. I also enjoy working particularly with the ever-so-common challenge of neck and shoulder tension.

The team is currently in fifth place in the Eastside/Bellevue Adult Softball League. Teammates David Trujillo and Dayton DeMello recount their epic win with pride. Team manager Dayton says, “Whether or not we win or lose, we are just out there to have fun. The team is a great way to get to know co-workers outside of work.”
